Best of The Decade: Online, Hair and Albums (Part 1)

Tonight on Diff'rent Strokes, Jade and Dave reminisces on the decade that is the noughties...

HAIR:

When we look back on hairstyles of the 80s, we think big, greasy and tons of hair spray... now what will we say when we look back on the noughties? Dave takes us through this decade's most memorable dos, from the boy band frost tips to the Posh bob...

ONLINE:

If there's one message Jade got this decade - it's "geeks rule"! Hear our Diff'rent Strokes duo talk about when geek became chic and how inventions like the iPod revolutionised the way we consume music. Jade and Dave looks back on the decade that ushered in the digital music era and talk about the rise of citizen journalism.

MUSIC:

Tonight on part one of Diff'rent Strokes' Best of The Decade, Dave shares his Top 10 Albums of The Decade. Tune in to hear Dave wax lyrical about the albums that have been significant to him - even if some of them weren't exactly top of the pops. PS - he is threatening at least one solo Spice Girl album in the countdown! You've been warned.

Tune in next week to hear Jade's albums of the decade and our best TV of the decade segment with special guest, John Richards.

John Richards, Street Press & Vanessa Amorosi

Tonight on Diff'rent Strokes...

PODCAST:

We rope in John Richards of the Boxcutters (Triple R) and Outland Institute (JOY 94.9) fame to talk about his podcast programs. Our Diff'rent Strokes duo and John discuss the difference between preparing for a radio show and a podcast show, and how people consume the two media.

MAGAZINE:

Jade steers Dave away from glossy magazines to talk about street press. How have Beat and Inpress - two of Melbourne's biggest live music street presses - managed to co-exist in such close competition? And what will happen when more print titles migrate online? We come up with a solution for Dave's "magazine sniffing" addiction...

MUSIC:

Dave reviews the boisterous new Vanessa Amorosi album, Hazardous. Safe to say, our V Mama is an Aussie pop battler fighting against all odds in an Australian media culture ridden with tall poppy syndrome. Tune in to sample four tracks off the album, including her first Australian #1 single, 'This Is Who I Am'.

It's that time of the year again and we're making our lists (and checking it twice)! Tonight Diff'rent Strokes presents their favourite TV shows, websites and music of the year...

TV:

Jade being the avid TV lover talks about her favourite new programs this year, and rediscovering classics. Every thing from Glee to Weeds - and longings to check out RuPaul's Drag Race. For Dave, it's been the year for TV on DVD and discovering series he missed on the tele. Plus, did Dave like the shows Jade recommended him this year? Hmm... 'urge to merge' much?

ONLINE:

Our Diff'rent Strokes pair nut out their websites of the year. Oh yes... it may have been the year of Twitter but what else have Jade and Dave been clicking through to? We'll also talk about the Top 20 most visited websites in the world. Can we say, "just Google it"?

Hands down, the hardest list to do. Tonight Jade and Dave will reveal their albums and songs of the year (we'll be spinning some of them on air too, of course). In true Diff'rent Strokes schizophonic variety, you can expect everything from Utada to Tegan and Sara...

Sesame Street, Tumblr and Beyonce!

This week on Diff'rent Strokes...

TV:

"Can you tell me how to get... how to get to Sesame Street?" Tonight Dave reminisces on everybody's favourite children's program, Sesame Street. The show has been educating and entertaining kids for over 40 years - and despite the ratings dip and show format changes, it remains a cornerstone of childhood entertainment and pop culture. So question is... who was your favourite Sesame Street character?

ONLINE:

Today it's Twitter but could tomorrow be about Tumblr? Jade gives us a geek down of this somewhat obscure blogging/social networking site whose famous users include Katy Perry and John Legend. Just how many ways can we get connected these days?

MUSIC:

To complement the live music theme we're having on tonight's show, Dave will review Beyonce's brand new live CD/DVD pack: I Am... Yours. The Diff'rent Strokes duo will talk about acoustic and unplugged performances - and whether we can expect the same quality of intimate performance from pop superstars like Beyonce, who are more accustomed to delivering arena-sized spectacles.

Forget What You've Heard

Speculation has been rife all week about the possible changes to Diff'rent Strokes radio. With less than four hours until show time - and still no official word from the show's representatives... Jade and Dave take a moment now to separate fact from fiction.

1. Jade has done a Cheryl Cole, taking a break from the group project to focus on her own solo career. The Podcraft becomes a runaway success this week with 239,000 downloads and new subscribers - much like Cole's debut single, 'Fight For This Love'. [FICTION]

2. Dave is putting together new segment intros for an all new Diff'rent Strokes. [FACT]

3. They've had a significant line up change overnight, and both Jade and Dave were replaced with younger, hotter presenters: Nat and @bui. Much like the Sugababes' rotating roster, all auditions and recruitment were top secret missions done by management without them knowing. [FICTION]

4. There will be more of Dave's pop music references on the show [FACT].

Britney, is that you?

Meanwhile, Ms Jade gets a taste of drag queen culture. She's donned a long, blonde wig and put on make up for the first time in her life... and lives to tell. The socially awkward self-confessed geek experiences glams up tonight as she picks her drag number. Disco classics, anyone?

Shoe Swap: Battle of Britpop

Diff'rent Strokes duo, Jade and Dave go head to head tonight in a battle of Britpop and British pop! What's the difference, you say? Well, put it this way... the genres are not interchangeable when describing Blur and Spice Girls!

A few weeks back Dave said to Jade, "I love my Britpop!"

Being of the indie alternative persuasion Jade was expecting glowing tales of Dave's exploration of 1990s British 'lad' types like Blur, Oasis, Pulp et al. But then he continued, to talk about Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Girls Aloud, Sugababes... (*insert Jade's outrage here*)

Surely it is common knowledge that British pop is not known as 'britpop'!

Well this Shoe Swap couldn't be timelier... coinciding with Oasis' announcement for what must be the hundredth time that they were breaking up, Dave and Jade will be paying tribute to Britpop and British pop on Diff'rent Strokes tonight!

Shoe Swap: 'Style Boards'

You better work! Tonight Jade and Dave talk about fashion and where they wanna take themselves stylistically in the future. Together the Diff'rent Strokes duo has come up with 'Style Boards' - showcasing their favourite bits of fashion and hairstyle.

Jade examines Dave's board to find meggings (men's leggings), designer sneakers and La Roux hair! Meanwhile, Dave indulges in Jade's penchant for quirky, geeky tops and comfortable hoodies.

This Shoe Swap will explore how different people identify with fashion and discuss how 'fashion-conscious' we really are.

"Most people have a personal style. Whether you think you're Galliano's long-lost muse or the kind that is unphased with fashion. You've got style. The choices you make from your hairstyles to the clothes you buy are all influenced by the culture and media surrounding you. Together, they help you construct your image," said Dave.

Shoe Swap: Jade's 'Style Board'

Let's take a peek into Jade's wardrobe and check out her fashion wish list!

The workaholic, Diff'rent Strokes diva describes her style as, "looking like I didn't try but I really thought about it."

TOP:

Plain hoodie
Something that's warm and easy to match with jeans is a priority. Nothing too 'brand heavy'.

T-Shirts With A Geek Factor
I own this one and it's my favourite at the moment. I tend to look out for indie band T-shirts or ones with some nerdy saying or pop culture reference.

BOTTOM:

Straight cut jeans
I prefer dark coloured jeans, usually in a straigh leg cut. A definite 'no' to skinny legged jeans.

DRESSY:

Light knit jumper
This is my pick if I'm going for something a bit nicer (for smart formal dress codes). I like it cause it can be worn with either a T-shirt or button up shirt underneath.

SHOES:

Vans Shoes
Any kind of shoes with a bit of personality. It has to be comfortable and come in a variety of interesting bright colours. When it comes to pattern and style, nothing too over the top - I prefer subtle hints of creativity.

HAIR:

Goku Spikes
People at work always say my hairstyle is like Dragonball Z, which is kind of true. I like razored, short spiky hairstyles with a little unruly look to it.
