Email Etiquette, Coloured Wristbands and Dexter

This week on Diff'rent Strokes...

CULTURE:

Jade and Dave discuss email etiquette. Can there ever be too many "xoxo"s and should you really be forwarding chain letters to your boss? We're living in a digital age now where email and online communications are paramount, yet there's still so much confusion and faux pas about how we relay information here. Tonight, we put the smack down on it all.

FLASHBACK:

Dave reminisces on the days when coloured wristbands were all the rage. It may not be such a thing of the past for some people but for us, it was totally the teen fashion accessory to be rocking circa 2004-2006. File under: "When Myspace Was Hot". We'll talk about what each wristband colour denoted and debate whether the meanings were lost on kids.

TV:

Jade belatedly checks out season one of Dexter this week and struggles to get her head around a serial killer protagonist. The American drama premiered back in 2006 and is set to premiere its sixth season next year. Bet you can't wait 'til the new season of tele winds back up again.

Wynter Gordon Interview, Christmas Parties and espnW

This week on Diff'rent Strokes...

MUSIC:

Dave catches up with American singer/songwriter Wynter Gordon on her first Aussie tour. The 'Dirty Talk' singer chats about her transition from R&B to dance music, getting love from music bloggers and her gay fans.

Melbourne queens, Wynter will be performing at The Pool Room tomorrow night (9 December) at The Pool Room, Ferntree Gully. Get your trashy arses there.

CULTURE:

It's that time of the year and work Christmas parties are rife, no doubt responsible for disgraceful behaviours and messed up Facebook photos. This week Jade and Dave discusses the pros and cons of letting yourself go at work events.

ONLINE:

Jade checks out ESPN's newly launched female counterpart: espnW. The new brand is said to target women with dedicated coverage of women's sports and female athletes. How do you see it? Much-needed filling of a niche market or simply a convenient exclusion of female sports content to - as one blogger calls it - a "pink ghetto"?

Qrushr, Nicki Minaj and Moving Out

This week on Diff'rent Strokes...

ONLINE:

Jade checks out Qrushr, the girl answer to Grindr. How does it differ from the gay counterpart and how do lesbians and gay men differ in their cruising habits? Could this app finally help Jade locate where all the lesbians are in town? We ponder these important questions and such.

MUSIC:

Dave checks out the hype behind Nicki Minaj and her Pink Friday debut. The controversial female rapper has had a good three years of build up to get the album right but her record, just like her presence, has once again split the hip hop community. Dave looks into why fans are hailing her as this generation's new hip hop promise and the hateration she attracts from other female rappers.

CULTURE:

Jade and Dave discuss moving out. Is it just us or is our generation staying home longer than our ancestors? Our Diff'rent Strokes pair will look at today's attitudes toward independence, living at home and how attitudes towards moving out differs in some Asian cultures.

This week on Diff'rent Strokes...

MUSIC:

Dave chats with The Potbelleez's Blue MC and Jonny Sonic about their forthcoming album Destination Now, measuring success and hints of a massive American collaboration.

Dave steps back in time with his favourite childhood read: Archie Comics. Hear him describe his experience growing up in Malaysia and consuming Archie's conservative American values, and the changes the series have made in the last ten years.

ONLINE:

Jade checks out Damn You Auto Correct! - a website dedicated to iPhone fails and Auto correct horreurs. Gurl, we've all been there and sent that.

TV Influencing Pop Charts, John Steel Singers and Flirting Online

This week on Diff'rent Strokes...

TV:

What's going on here? Robyn on Gossip Girl.

Jade and Dave discuss TV is breaking artists and influencing the pop charts today. Don't get it twisted. This is nothing new! History can attest to how music programs have launched many a pop careers but how has that relationship changed with viewers and music buyers today? We'll cover the Greys Anatomy-type soundtrack successes, talent shows and of course, Glee.

MUSIC:

Jade reviews Brisbane indie band John Steel Singers' debut LP: Tangalooma. The six-piece band has enjoyed steady radio support for their tracks over the past few years and after purveying several EPs and a mini-album, here's the breakthrough album. Tangalooma debuted at #67 in Australia this week.

ONLINE:

Dave is flicking on the webcam and showing a bit of leg. No, he's not. But he could be persuaded to, if you persist. Instead, our Diff'rent Strokes duo will talk about flirting on the interwebs. Think: how we flirt, tease and hook up on social media platforms like Formspring, Twitter, Tumblr and Grindr.

Blockbuster Culture, Jessica Mauboy and Fringe

This week on Diff'rent Strokes...

CULTURE:

How does a movie, a song or TV show rise above the rest and make its mark on our culture? What is it about some arts and entertainment that makes them so iconic to the point where you don't have to consume it to know what it's about? Tonight Jade and Dave will discuss some of the world's biggest movies and shows - and what makes them tick with the masses.

MUSIC:

Dave checks out the eagerly anticipated sophomore album by Jessica Mauboy: Get Em Girls. After slaying the competition with her platinum-selling debut album, J Mally heads over to the States to craft an album worthy of Sasha Fierce's weave and unitards. Tune in to preview several tracks on Dave's album in the blend treatment.

TV:

Jade gets geeky this week for the American sci-fi TV show Fringe and we don't doubt that there'll be some kind of ill-fated comparison to her beloved X Files series. You've been warned. As if the geek chic wasn't quite enough with the sci-fi theme, Fringe also has a comic book offshoot.

Mike & Molly, The Naked & Famous and Gig Etiquette

This week on Diff'rent Strokes...

TV:

Dave checks out the much-discussed new sitcom about two plus-sized people: Mike & Molly. The show follows the life of an overweight police officer and primary school teacher who meet at an Overeaters Anonymous club and their plight to lose weight and dodge the fat jibes from family and friends. We'll also respond to the Marie Claire controversy where writer Maura Kelly calls it "gross" to see "fatties" kissing on TV.

MUSIC:

Jade reviews The Naked & Famous' new album: Passive Me Aggressive You. The indie electro band from New Zealand drops their long waited debut LP following the success of their NZ #1 single 'Young Blood'. The band will be playing in Melbourne tonight and tomorrow night before jetting off to the UK and US later this month.

Check their Myspace for more touring info.

CULTURE:

Jade and Dave discuss gig etiquette. It's all very timely seeing as our Diff'rent Strokes pair will be heading off to see The Naked & Famous after the show but first, let's lay down the house rules on talking, taking photos and singing along.

Dannii Minogue Interview

This week on Diff'rent Strokes...

Dave chats with Dannii Minogue about her glittery career in entertainment, her relationship with the gay community and future music plans.

It has been a massive year for new mum Dannii - nappy changes aside, she is still holding down the X Factor judging panel in the UK and is currently promoting her first tell-all autobiography: My Story.

Tonight Dannii reminisces on her Young Talent Time years and talks about her unexpected return to family TV entertainment almost thirty years later on the X Factor.

She also opens up about her relationship with the gay music scene and the inadvertent statement she made when she insisted on performing at London's G-A-Y back in the day.

Dannii Minogue is still very much the queen of clubs over in the UK with an unmatched record of 12 consecutive #1 club hits but while she remains unsure of her place in the music industry, tonight she talks about her new recordings and tells fans to, "watch this space!"

Dannii's autobiography My Story is in stores Monday.

Facebook Friending, Lip Service and Good Hair

This week on Diff'rent Strokes...

ONLINE:

Jade and Dave has a straight up discussion about Facebook friending, privacy settings and - as all our chat about FB usually ends up - Mama Lim's bizarre social networking antics.

TV:

Jade reviews a new lesbian drama Lip Service. The show follows a group of lesbians in Glasgow and the relationships they form in their world. Could this be better than The L Word and more importantly, will it present an acceptable representation of lesbians on TV?

CULTURE:

Anyone who knows Dave knows that he takes great pride in his hair. This week, our quiffed Diff'rent Strokes diva checks out Chris Rock's Good Hair documentary and explores the relationship the black community has with their hair.

This week on Diff'rent Strokes...

INTERVIEW:

Dave chats with TV Rock's Grant Smillie about his latest mix tape, the changing dance music scene and new Zoe Badwi and Wynter Gordon projects.

Download Grant's Neon Essential 10 mix tape.

CULTURE:

Jade and Dave tries to get into morphsuits! Not literally. Thank gawd. But our dynamic duo will report on this outrageous trend sweeping sporting venues and party scenes - and of course, ask all the important questions like: "Can you see out of it?", "How do you pee?" and "Where do you put your wallet?"

MUSIC:

This week on Diff'rent Strokes...

MUSIC:

Dave chats with neo-soul/jazz artiste Kimbra about her new single 'Settle Down', shooting the fantastic video and yes, he even tries to convince her to come out gay clubbing.

Kimbra will be touring all month, so check out the dates at her Myspace.

MAGAZINES:

Dave checks out the iconic Interview magazine started by Andy Warhol in the late 60s' and discusses it's style, subjects and elitist air.

FLASHBACK:

Jade's flashing back to the grunge music era tonight to discuss the sound and culture that was so representative of its scene in the mid 80s. Think of the popularity of Nirvana's Nevermind and Pearl Jam's Ten in the 90s - and what's left of the movement today.

Shuffler.fm, Junior Masterchef and Hurts

This week on Diff'rent Strokes...

ONLINE:

Dave checks out the world's first music blog powered web radio, Shuffler.fm. This nifty little site is broken down into music genres, allowing you to shuffle through tracks (and the accompanying blog posts) in each category. It's a great way to get your music blog out there, and for music fans, you're only ever a click away from discovering new choons.

[Insert subtle cross-promo here: Check out Dave's pop music blog, Feed Limmy]

TV:

Jade got sucked into Junior Masterchef. How, we'll never know. This show is essentially two-parts of Jade's least favourite things: petulant children and reality TV. Hear Jade justify her viewing tonight and probably vow to reclaim her cred by watching more Skins.

MUSIC:
