TV Influencing Pop Charts, John Steel Singers and Flirting Online

This week on Diff'rent Strokes...

TV:

What's going on here? Robyn on Gossip Girl.

Jade and Dave discuss TV is breaking artists and influencing the pop charts today. Don't get it twisted. This is nothing new! History can attest to how music programs have launched many a pop careers but how has that relationship changed with viewers and music buyers today? We'll cover the Greys Anatomy-type soundtrack successes, talent shows and of course, Glee.

MUSIC:

Jade reviews Brisbane indie band John Steel Singers' debut LP: Tangalooma. The six-piece band has enjoyed steady radio support for their tracks over the past few years and after purveying several EPs and a mini-album, here's the breakthrough album. Tangalooma debuted at #67 in Australia this week.

ONLINE:

Dave is flicking on the webcam and showing a bit of leg. No, he's not. But he could be persuaded to, if you persist. Instead, our Diff'rent Strokes duo will talk about flirting on the interwebs. Think: how we flirt, tease and hook up on social media platforms like Formspring, Twitter, Tumblr and Grindr.

Facebook Friending, Lip Service and Good Hair

This week on Diff'rent Strokes...

ONLINE:

Jade and Dave has a straight up discussion about Facebook friending, privacy settings and - as all our chat about FB usually ends up - Mama Lim's bizarre social networking antics.

TV:

Jade reviews a new lesbian drama Lip Service. The show follows a group of lesbians in Glasgow and the relationships they form in their world. Could this be better than The L Word and more importantly, will it present an acceptable representation of lesbians on TV?

CULTURE:

Anyone who knows Dave knows that he takes great pride in his hair. This week, our quiffed Diff'rent Strokes diva checks out Chris Rock's Good Hair documentary and explores the relationship the black community has with their hair.

We'll talk weaves, relaxer and extensions - get ready to whip your hurr back and forth.

Kathy Griffin, This Is Why You're Fat and Sleigh Bells

This week on Diff'rent Strokes...

TV:

Jade watching reality TV? Is this a sign of the apocalypse? This week our resident TV geek switches on to Kathy Griffin's My Life On The D-List. Foremost known as a comedian and popular gay rights activist, Griffin has enjoyed a long run with this reality TV show which has featured appearances from the likes of Bette Midler, Jane Lynch and even Paris Hilton.

ONLINE:

This Is Why You're Fat is that guilty indulgence you don't want to stomache. This popular American blog is home to the fattiest, most calorie-escalating food created on this planet. It's amazing to see how much deep-fried meat and cream people can handle.

MUSIC:

We're reviewing the debut album by alternative punk band Sleigh Bells tonight. Treats has been gathering rave reviews ever since it dropped last month. Jade checks out what all the fuss is about.

Jade's America Adventure, Things Bogans Like & "Curve" Mag

This week on Diff'rent Strokes...

The one and only Jade Gulliver returns to Diff'rent Strokes tonight, bringing with her some highlights of her American escape. Hear Jade recount spending Christmas and New Years over in sleepy Tulsa and seeing New York (home of our beloved 30 Rock).

Things Bogans Like is one of Dave's new favourite blogs. Tonight our Diff'rent Strokes duo will talk about dip into bogan culture and do a bit of self-assessment. We'll talk about our iconic bogues Kath & Kim and if there's an American equivalent for something that fabulous.

MAGAZINE:

Jade brings back a good old lesbian magazine from the States - Curve! We're not used to lesbian magazines talking about 101 ways to orgasm... so this'll be a revelation. Much to Dave's unease...

Dave reviews his new favourite magazine, Winq - a global queer culture magazine for gay men. Why is it so hard to find a well-proportioned gay men's magazine? Pun intended.

Best of The Decade TV and Music, and AudioBoo!

This week on Diff'rent Strokes... we're not quite finished with the best of the decade yet!

TV:

Jade and our special guest, John Richards from Boxcutters and Outland Institute talk about how the concept of "watching television" has changed in the last 10 years and their favourite TV shows of the decade. Everything from Buffy to 30 Rock is on the platter, and I'm sure Jade will try to fit X Files in there somewhere...

MUSIC:

It's Jade's turn this week to share her favourite albums of the decade! Where last week Dave had everything from Brandy to Emma Bunton - in true Diff'rent Strokes style, Jade will counter it with an alternative list of Tegan & Sara, Green Day and Postal Service.

ONLINE:

Dave brings AudioBoo to our attention. Often described as the spoken word equivalent of Twitter or YouTube - AudioBoo allows users to record and upload digital recordings onto their own channel. Just like YouTube, you can subscribe or follow AudioBoo users - and be the first to hear their latest 'boos'.

Tonight on Diff'rent Strokes, Jade and Dave reminisces on the decade that is the noughties...

ONLINE:

If there's one message Jade got this decade - it's "geeks rule"! Hear our Diff'rent Strokes duo talk about when geek became chic and how inventions like the iPod revolutionised the way we consume music. Jade and Dave looks back on the decade that ushered in the digital music era and talk about the rise of citizen journalism.

MUSIC:

Best of 2009: TV, Online & Music!

It's that time of the year again and we're making our lists (and checking it twice)! Tonight Diff'rent Strokes presents their favourite TV shows, websites and music of the year...

TV:

Jade being the avid TV lover talks about her favourite new programs this year, and rediscovering classics. Every thing from Glee to Weeds - and longings to check out RuPaul's Drag Race. For Dave, it's been the year for TV on DVD and discovering series he missed on the tele. Plus, did Dave like the shows Jade recommended him this year? Hmm... 'urge to merge' much?

ONLINE:

Our Diff'rent Strokes pair nut out their websites of the year. Oh yes... it may have been the year of Twitter but what else have Jade and Dave been clicking through to? We'll also talk about the Top 20 most visited websites in the world. Can we say, "just Google it"?

MUSIC:

Hands down, the hardest list to do. Tonight Jade and Dave will reveal their albums and songs of the year (we'll be spinning some of them on air too, of course). In true Diff'rent Strokes schizophonic variety, you can expect everything from Utada to Tegan and Sara...

Sesame Street, Tumblr and Beyonce!

This week on Diff'rent Strokes...

TV:

"Can you tell me how to get... how to get to Sesame Street?" Tonight Dave reminisces on everybody's favourite children's program, Sesame Street. The show has been educating and entertaining kids for over 40 years - and despite the ratings dip and show format changes, it remains a cornerstone of childhood entertainment and pop culture. So question is... who was your favourite Sesame Street character?

ONLINE:

Today it's Twitter but could tomorrow be about Tumblr? Jade gives us a geek down of this somewhat obscure blogging/social networking site whose famous users include Katy Perry and John Legend. Just how many ways can we get connected these days?

MUSIC:

To complement the live music theme we're having on tonight's show, Dave will review Beyonce's brand new live CD/DVD pack: I Am... Yours. The Diff'rent Strokes duo will talk about acoustic and unplugged performances - and whether we can expect the same quality of intimate performance from pop superstars like Beyonce, who are more accustomed to delivering arena-sized spectacles.

Celebrity Apps, "The Advocate" & Shakira!

This week on Diff'rent Strokes...

ONLINE:

Celebrity apps! We're living in an iPhone culture, where it's all about apps and getting entertainment directly from our phone. Dave reports on the celebrities that have jumped on this band wagon and review their apps. Who has the better value app? Britney, Pussycat Dolls or Lady Gaga? From the look of these time wasters, we reckon a Diff'rent Strokes app could easily be more fun.

MAGAZINES:

Jade reviews "The Advocate" magazine - an American gay and lesbian monthly magazine. Tune in to her talk about the magazine's content and style, and whether there's a market for a regular GLBTIQ news magazine in Australia.

MUSIC:

Dave reviews Shakira's latest album She Wolf. Tune to hear him go as far as touting this as one of his albums of the year. As always, there will be an 'album in the blend' - so you can sample four tracks off the record.

Tony, Unusual USBs & Dashboard Confessional!

This week on Diff'rent Strokes Jade and Dave reunites with fellow SYN alumni, Anthony McCormack. Tune in to hear the real voice behind our famous Diff'rent Strokes intro live and in action with us in the studio.

TV:

Our special guest, former Naughty Rude TV producer Anthony McCormack talks about life in community TV, Channel 31 going digital and a certain TV bigwig knocking on NRTV's door.

ONLINE:

It's technically more technology than 'online' per se. Dave talks about the weird and wonderful USB flash drives! Why settle for a garden variety plain black one when you could have a Bento box or Yoda dangling from the side of your laptop?

MUSIC:

Jade reviews Dashboard Confessional's new album Alter The Ending. As a big fan of old school angsty Dashboard material, how will she take to the new material? Tune in to hear an 'album in the blend' - letting you sample four tracks off the album.
