Hanging With Friends App, Favourite Board Games and Liam Finn

This week on Diff'rent Strokes... it's our last show on this time slot. In case you haven't heard, we are going "prime time".

Diff'rent Strokes with Jade and Dave will premiere at Wednesdays, 7-8pm on JOY 94.9 starting 6 July.

ONLINE:

Jade starts Hanging With Friends. The app, not literally. Although, when she does she'll probably be dividing her time between that and utilising some app anyway. Looks like we've found a new app obsession!

CULTURE:

Dave and Jade reminisce on their favourite board games and discuss whether games nights have a place in youth culture. Let's face it. They might be moving to a time in their lives where they'd prefer to have mates over for a board games than a wild night out clubbing. What's your favourite board game?

MUSIC:

Jade reviews Liam Finn's latest album FOMO. As his third solo release overall, FOMO has been described as a good collection of breezy indie/pop but will it be a defining record in his discography? Only time will tell.

Wynter Gordon Interview, Instagram and 5mag

This week on Diff'rent Strokes...

MUSIC:

Dave reunites with one of his most beloved upcoming singer/songwriters Wynter Gordon as she returns to Australia to launch the all important debut album: With The Music I Die.

They pair first hit it off in December when Wynter came to Australia for the first time (and into JOY studios) to promote her single 'Dirty Talk'. Since then, the song has gone #1 here with almost four times platinum sales - a success Jade will eternally attribute as the "Diff'rent Strokes bump".

Tonight, you'll hear our interview with Wynter where she discusses With The Music I Die and her definition of dance music, and opens up to Dave about how heartbreak inspired her writing.

ONLINE:

Jade checks out Instagram - the photo sharing app that comes armed with all the hipster-friendly effects that Dave wants. It basically takes the vintage concept of "instant Polaroids" snaps to a digital era where you can snap, upload and share your pictures via your iPhone.

MAGAZINES:

Could this be the future of magazines? It's the perfect marriage of Jade's love for all things digital and Dave's deep appreciation for that glossy magazine style. 5mag is "the world's first digital lifestyle magazine" bursting with interactivity, video messages and interviews and yes, it even flicks like a real magazine.

Seeker Lover Keeper, About.Me and An Idiot Abroad

This week on Diff'rent Strokes...

MUSIC:

Jade checks out Seeker Lover Keeper, a trio made up of A-grade indie singer/songwriters Sarah Blasko, Holly Throsby and Sally Seltmann. Think of this as the Young Divas of the indie pop world without the disco covers and struggling solo careers. Seeker Lover Keeper's self-titled LP debuted at #3, making it the highest-selling new album of the week.

ONLINE:

Dave creates a personal home page on About.Me, an online web directory for all his various social networking profiles. Is this the way to go for an overly connected generation of internet users? Check out Dave's About.Me page for a point of reference.

TV:

Jade checks on travel documentary series An Idiot Abroad, starring popular podcaster and author Karl Pilkington, comedians Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. It's a culture shock experience like nothing you've ever encountered as these blokes travel through China, India, Mexico, Egypt and various places. Hook on your seatbelts, it's time for take off!

FLASHBACK:

Jade and Dave reminisce on 90s film icons and the defining movies of that era. Anyone say Jodie Foster, Drew Barrymore, Michelle Pfeiffer and Bruce Willis? The list goes on. Who else was reigning the film industry in that era?

ONLINE:

You know we always got your best interest at heart when we suggest you more sites to procrastinate on. Presenting your new internet addiction: 9GAG. It's a website where all the fun of the interwebs go to play. Jade and Dave talk about the popularity of sites like 9GAG and why our parents should just get onto it rather than forwarding us chain emails of funnies.

MUSIC:

Yesterday Dave saw a popular digital music store packaging a "One Hit Wonder" compilation where you can buy these forgotten classics for a little over a dollar. This prompted much discussion about Jade and Dave's favourite one hit wonders and whether there's a similar sentiment applied to indie/underground bands.

Jess McAvoy Interview, Passive Aggression at Work and Paper.li

This week on Diff'rent Strokes...

MUSIC:

Jade chats with Melbourne indie artist Jess McAvoy about her imminent move to America and artistic reinvention, and why she wants to have a debate with Dave about Lady Gaga. Jess even did an exclusive acoustic performance for Diff'rent Strokes, so tune in to experience it. In the meantime, take a look at her stunning video for 'The Sailor':

CULTURE:

Jade and Dave vent on the kind of passive aggression they come across at work and this hilarious blog dedicated to bullshit of that nature. Are you a victim of a workplace with confronting notes plastered all over the communal break room or kitchen? This one's for you.

ONLINE:

Dave checks out Paper.li - a website that allows you to create your own online newspaper built from your own Twitter and Facebook feeds. Who said print is dead? It lives on in the digital world.

Here's an example of well-functioning Paper.li publication: Justin Barbour Daily. We are having all kinds of drama getting the inaugural printing of Diff'rent Strokes Times out on Paper.li so we'll have to update you on it when it's ready for viewing.

Check out Jade's own Jade Gulliver Daily.
