Tatiana Interview, Working in Fast Food and That Can Be My Next Tweet

This week on Diff'rent Strokes...

MUSIC:

Dave chats with Polish diva Tatiana on her very first Australian radio interview about her debut international single 'Spider Web', cracking the UK and promises of a James Bond-esque album.

You can read the full interview on Dave's Feed Limmy blog after the show.

CULTURE:

Our Diff'rent Strokes divas may be living life in the limelight now but like many young'ins, they started off working in a fast food joint. Tonight they look at the cultural impact of fast food employment on our generation and reminisce a little on the good, the bad and the greasy.

ONLINE:

Jade and Dave checks out "That Can Be My Next Tweet" - this site that predicts your next tweet by scrambling morsels of all your previous Twitter updates. Oh, the mayhem.

Generation L, Clients From Hell and Cold War Kids

This week on Diff'rent Strokes...

TV:

Jade checks out Australia's first ever lesbian reality drama: Generation L. At this stage, the series is only gonna be made available as webisodes - with the very first episode premiering tonight - but there's whispers that this could arrive on TV soon!

Check out the series trailer here and tune in to hear our first impressions:

"I'm sick of you telling people I'm a starfish... everyone thinks there's something wrong with it and I look like a dud root." Dies.

ONLINE:

Dave brings us the collective groans and facepalms that is Clients From Hell - a blog dedicated to client horror stories submitted by designers. This will undoubtedly lead to discussions of how society values what our creative friends do.

MUSIC:

Jade reviews Cold War Kids' Mine Is Yours album. The indie rockers have teamed up with Grammy-winning producer Jacquire King - the man behind Kings of Leon and Modest Mouse records. Mine Is Yours has, to date, charted as high as #9 in Australia.

Jordan Jesse Go, Cougar Town & Broken Bells

This week on Diff'rent Strokes...

PODCAST:

Jade gets into the Jordan Jesse Go podcast. This hilarious American comedy podcast is essentially about life... according to two guys in their twenties. Three years in the running with an impressive "Best of iTunes" pick to brag about, is there anything stopping Jordan and Jesse?

Find Jordan Jesse Go podcasts here

TV:

Dave's used to embracing awkward solo projects (think: Michelle Williams and Victoria Beckham's albums) but how will he react to ex-Friends star, Courtney Cox's Cougar Town? Tonight we discuss post-Friends careers and if this is the show to break Courtney away from "Monica".

MUSIC:

Jade takes a listen to Broken Bells' self-titled debut album tonight. American indie rock duo, Broken Bells, is made up of producer Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton) and James Mercer, the vocalist and lead guitarist from The Shins. What's the verdict on this collaboration?

John Richards, Street Press & Vanessa Amorosi

Tonight on Diff'rent Strokes...

PODCAST:

We rope in John Richards of the Boxcutters (Triple R) and Outland Institute (JOY 94.9) fame to talk about his podcast programs. Our Diff'rent Strokes duo and John discuss the difference between preparing for a radio show and a podcast show, and how people consume the two media.

MAGAZINE:

Jade steers Dave away from glossy magazines to talk about street press. How have Beat and Inpress - two of Melbourne's biggest live music street presses - managed to co-exist in such close competition? And what will happen when more print titles migrate online? We come up with a solution for Dave's "magazine sniffing" addiction...

MUSIC:

Dave reviews the boisterous new Vanessa Amorosi album, Hazardous. Safe to say, our V Mama is an Aussie pop battler fighting against all odds in an Australian media culture ridden with tall poppy syndrome. Tune in to sample four tracks off the album, including her first Australian #1 single, 'This Is Who I Am'.

The All New Diff'rent Strokes

The wait is ova, Rihanna style.

Diff'rent Strokes pilots their all new format tonight: prepare for a camp and geek collision of all things media!

"A change is as good as a holiday! It was time for us to refine the focus of the show," says Jade who has been co-hosting the show with Dave for over two and a half years now.

"A media focused show makes sense because both Jade and I both work in the media. It's our opportunity to marry our interests in magazine publishing, podcasting and music and give you guys our signature Diff'rent Strokes take on those topics," Dave explains.

Our new episodes will feature all new segments on :
- Music
- Podcasts
- Magazines
- Online/Blogs
- TV
- and more...

"We're excited about new opportunities for interviews and more in-depth discussions about what we're passionate about. I mean, it could only mean more pop music rants from David Lim!" says Jade.

In our pilot episode tonight...

MAGAZINE:

Dave talks about the interesting hybrid magazine/album booklet package found in Mariah Carey's new album, Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel. This luxurious 34-page mini Elle magazine dedicated to all things Mimi is the first of its kind... could it signal a new lucrative partnership between the magazine publishers and record companies?

MUSIC:

Jade reviews the new Tegan & Sara album, Sainthood and reflects on famous sibling bands. Hanson, anyone?

PODCAST:

Jade presents an introduction to one of her favourite podcasts - Planet Money. Even if you're not an economics guru, you'll fall in love with their witty anecdotes and pop culture references. Check out Planet Money's podcasts here.

Thanksgiving vs. Lunar New Year

There's nothing like the charm of family get-togethers over the holidays...

(Gong Xi Fa Cai...)

This week, Jade checks out the decadent 15-day long celebration that is the Lunar New Year - and it's myriad of superstitions, including how to curse your maternal uncle.

(Gobble gobble!)

Meanwhile, Dave learns about Thanksgiving and Jade's love for canned pumpkin. There's much to be thankful for when everything is served with whipped cream!

Click here for your portion of the Shoe Swap.

(Blur = Britpop)

In other news, the entire Diff'rent Strokes Music Special: Indie folk, meet electro pop (20 May) is also available for your podcasting pleasure.

"We don't see Diff'rent Strokes as a music show, really. Yet music is something Jade and I are both so passionate about in our own way! I for one, cannot be stopped... Bitch goes on a rant every time he back announces an Utada album track," said Dave.

But what is Diff'rent Strokes without their signature yin-and-yang mash of alternative music and pop? You say, 'brit pop'... Jade thinks Blur, Dave puts forth Sugababes.

(Sugababes = British pop)

Check out as Jade and Dave discuss how they consume indie and electro pop music - and what they look for in the genres' artist, performance and production.

Hear Jade map out the three degrees of separation between Jade music and Dave music.

Diff'rent Strokes "Spotlight" #1- Kim 'Canuck' Collins

Jade and Dave have unveiled yet another new segment. 'Spotlight' is our opportunity to find out more about you, the listener of our little show. Our premiere of this segment is a profile of Kim 'Canuck' Collins.

1. Name: Kim "Canuck" Collins

2. Where Are You From? Bloomington, Indiana, USA

Canuck in action figure pose

3. What Are Your Favourite Diff'rent Strokes moments? Jade and her (black) green thumb, as well as the Kaiser Chiefs cover

4. Tell us about yourself (written by her friend Katie)MY DEAR FRIEND CANUCK

MY FRIEND CANUCK IS AN ADORABLE, SANDAL-WEARING, TREE-HUGGING,MUSIC-LOVING, BOOK-READING, GREEN THUMB, ARTSY-FARTSY, QUASI-HIPPY WHO TREATS ALL LIVING THINGS WITH LOVE AND RESPECT.

SHE’S ONE OF THOSE ‘GOOD’ AMERICANS WHO WOULDN’T VOTE REPUBLICAN EVEN IF HER LEFT EYE DEPENDED ON IT! SHE’D GIVE UP THAT LEFT EYE ANYWAYS, CAUSE SHE’S ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A PIRATE WITH AN EYE PATCH.

CANUCK IS A MODERN-DAY LESBIAN MACGYVER WHO PUTS RICHARD DEAN ANDERSON TO SHAME. SHE’S SO CRAFTY, YOU COULD GIVE HER SOME STRING AND SOME STRAW AND SHE’D BUILD YOU A DURABLE FLOATATION DEVICE OR A BEAUTIFUL NECKLACE THAT WOULD DOUBLE AS A ‘HELP, I’M LOST’ GPS SYSTEM.

IF YOU DO BECOME LOST, CANUCK IS CAPABLE OF RECOGNIZING ALL CALLS OF DISTRESS, INCLUDING THE ONES OF SEXY, STRANDED LADIES AT THE PUB OR WOMYN’S MUSIC FESTIVALS. BUT BACK TO THE POINT.

WHEN SHE DOES HEAR YOUR DISTRESS CALL, CANUCK IS CAPABLE OF SNOW-BOARDING, BIKING, KAYAKING, TREE-CLIMBING OR SCRUMMING TO YOUR RESCUE. SHE’LL EVEN JUMP ON A PLANE AND SIT IN THE CHEAP SEATS!  WHAT A LADY!

SHE’S A TRULY DEVOTED FRIEND. AND IF YOUR FAVORITE FLOWER WAS A ROSE, SHE’D PLANT YOU AN ENTIRE ROSH BUSH.  AND THEN DRAW A PICTURE OF YOU SITTING BY YOUR FRESHLY GROWN ROSE PATCH, EATING HER VERY OWN HOME-GROWN TOMATOES.

THERE’S REALLY NOT MUCH THAT CANUCK HASN’T CONQUERED. BUT WILL SOMEONE SPECIAL BE ABLE TO CONQUER HER? SHE’S ESPECIALLY FOND OF AUSTRALIAN ACCENTS. SHE’LL EVEN GO FOR A KIWI!

5. Love broadcast or podcast listener? Podcast, as I am not usually awake when you're live

6. How did you find Diff'rent Strokes? I love Jade, so I keep tabs on her from across the world

7. Jade is... a dingo lover (I hope this does not mean anything else but what it is over in OZ, Jade)

8. Dave is... a future friend of mine, I can tell...and also, unfiltered.

9. Other shows I love; The Lesbian Mafia, This American Life, The Moth Podcast

10. Something I'd Like To See Diff'rent Strokes do; Continue to post live VIDEO podcasts... you two are even better when we can see and not only hear your antics!

11. What are your similarities to Jade and/or Dave? Well, I am like Jade because I like quiet nights in and making out with girls...and I am like Dave because I have great fashion sense ;)
